Thomas Wachholz’s paintings create a dense visual net of formal traces and personal memories, structured by opaque color areas, iconic symbols such as stars or clouds and grids with geometric contours. Wachholz explores the hidden dimensions of everyday materials, appropriating the formal layout of matchboxes in his recent work. Collected over the years in places such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, cinemas, clubs or businesses, the usually colorfully designed boxes shift the artist’s perception to an object connected to specific places from our past.

Thomas Wachholz lives and works in Cologne and studied with Katharina Grosse and Marcel Odenbach and has already received numerous solo exhibitions.
