Generation mate of Rothko, Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly who became best known for his colourful abstract images on curved canvases, similar to a shield or a saddle. In doing so, he created new forms of depth, thus bridging the gap between painting and sculpture. The two shapes on a white background are reminiscent of biomorphic, living organisms, called 'marks' by the artists.
