Vanfleteren’s style is characterised by sobriety and character photography. He photographs in black and white and leaves out as much as possible. In 2009, the retrospective Portret 1989 - 2009 gave an overview of his penetrating black-and-white portraits. The exhibition took place in the Nieuw Circus, an old circus building in Ghent, and attracted almost 60,000 visitors in a few months’ time.
THE ARTIST: STEPHAN VANFLETEREN
Vanfleteren studied photography at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussels. Initially he worked mainly for the Flemish newspaper De Morgen, but his work also appears in magazines such as Paris Match, Le Monde 2, Independent Magazine, Die Zeit, Knack, Humo and Volkskrant Magazine.
