ARTIST: BART RAMAKERS x WILLIAM SWEETLOVE

Bart Ramakers (b. 1963) is a Belgian modern artist and storyteller. He depicts modern variations on ancient mythological themes in photographed scenes, often with double meanings and nods to art history on the one hand and current events on the other: gender issues, climate change, solidarity.... He sometimes makes excursions into video and sculpture, but always returns to the sensitive plate, on which he indulges in chiaroscuro and theatricality. Bart regularly collaborates with other art enthusiasts, such as Tom Herck, Panamarenko and William Sweetlove. With the latter, in 2019 he created Flora and the Water Warriors, a series of water goddesses for a better climate.

William Sweetlove was born in 1949 in Ostend, Belgium. Since 2003, he has been a member of the artist collective The Cracking Art Group in northern Italy. In their manifesto, The Cracking Art Group calls on their members to spread a vision of the world infused with elements of irony and ecological awareness. To this, William Sweetlove adds the over-conviction that art should also be an antidote to over-consumption and over-production. His paintings, sculptures and assemblages are his impressions of existence reproduced in materials such as polyester, animal skins and textiles. William Sweetlove thus forms his own world. He is represented by galleries around the world, from Sweden to South Africa and from Palm Springs to Seoul. The project Flora and the Water Warriors, which he realized in photographic scenes and bronze sculptures with Bart Ramakers, was exhibited at the Notelaer in Hingene and at the Musée Matisse in Le Ca-teau-Cambrésis, among others.
