‘As I draw from existing imagery, it is important for me to know what the source image is about. The starting point is crucial to justify the relevance of my work. So in that sense, how I see and perceive things is perhaps more important than emotion … When painting, you have to transfer the intelligence that you have amassed directly on canvas, put all the things that are in your mind into your hand.’ – Luc Tuymans, in conversation with Phillips' Deputy Chairwoman, Europe, Marianne Hoet, 2019.

One of the most influential painters working today, Luc Tuymans at once defies painterly convention, and embraces painting as the most traditional of all artistic mediums. Examples of Tuymans work can be found in major international institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others. His work was recently the subject of a major solo exhibition at David Zwirner in New York,

Luc Tuymans: The Barn, from May – July 2023. Tuymans has been represented by David Zwirner since 1994; this is the celebrated artist’s seventeenth show with the gallery.
