Frieke presented one of these images of people floating above the sea last year at Scharpoord ( Knokke cultural centre) A purifying series about our urge for escapism and our search for meaning, inspired by Milan Kundera’s novel ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Existence’. In her strikingly staged portrait photography of people and animals, Bruges-born Janssens departs more often from imagination than reality. Like a painter uses his canvas, she uses her studio to control light, composition, models and setting. She has exhibited her series ‘Smoking Kids’ and ‘Animalcoholics’ in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Bilbao, among other places. Her work has already appeared in The Guardian and The Huffington Post.
