The paintings, painted objects and sculptures of Fleur De Roeck are special for at least three reasons. Firstly, because of her use of colour. In the composition, her bright areas of colour are dosed precisely, but applied with such apparent carelessness that it becomes funny to look at. Secondly, because of her use of lines and dots, which recur as recognisa-ble elements. Her use of lines comes from her daily practice. De Roeck is used to sketching with Chinese ink, which she loves because, in her own words, it gives her only one chance. Working with Chinese ink is now or never. I don’t have to think about it, it comes immedia-tely. This directness gives her work a spontaneous and welcoming character, even though the world she evokes with those lines is often dark and wild. Sometimes the dots represent eyes, sometimes flower buds, sometimes heavenly bodies, sometimes they are nothing more than a pattern to follow. In addition, a grid often appears as an element, suggesting a depth that she then skilfully denies in the rest of the composition. Thirdly, because of what she does with white, which is abundantly present. Either as background and resting point, or because she uses it to make recesses in underlying layers of paint. In this way, she plays with texture and with the viewer’s perspective.

THE ARTIST: FLEUR DE ROECK

Fleur De Roeck (°1992 in Brasschaat, Belgium) graduated in 2014 in Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Illustration however, never fully satisfied her creative nature and so she abandoned it after her formal education to explore the freedom of other mediums. The following years she evolved from collage to painting, installation and sculpture and broke through all the boundaries she learned at the academy. From then on, De Roeck’s process revolved around constant renewal and discovery.
