Today, we increasingly stare at the screen of our smartphones and computers. In contrast, Ots uses old-fashioned projector screens, which he collected from second-hand stores, to create his series of “Periaqueductal Gray. He cuts them into narrow strips and glues them onto a wooden base, creating a special effect. In this way, the artist wants to bring people together to stare at something different, just like in the old days.

THE ARTIST: JURGEN OTS

His work, which balances on the border between sculpture, installation and (Xerox) print, is created under the alchemical motto “Solve et Coagula,” which literally means “to dissolve and solidify,” or even simpler: to break down (into smaller parts) and reassemble (into a new larger whole). Through repeated actions and elaborate ways of manipulation, he explores the limits of the image.
