The Stars will bend, 2011

  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Size: 200 x 160 cm

After visiting the Kolumba Museum in Cologne, he got to know the architect Peter Zumthor, who realized a modern building in the ruins of St. Columba’s church in 2007.
Kolumba museum is a paragon of purity, aesthetics and spiritualized architecture where the names of the works of art are not mentioned but speak for themselves. A year later Hans met Gerda Vanderkerken of the Zwart Huis from Knokke who provided me with an adverti-sing brochure of the spa in Valse (Switzerland). Also a design by Peter Zumthor. He painted ‘The Stars will bend’ after an image from one of the brochure photos, but transformed it into a nocturnal version of the enclosed space in the mountains, an architectural ‘Hortus Con-clusus’, open upwards and reflecting inwards into the water, thus connecting the cosmos with the water through architecture. The title ‘The Stars will bend’ refers to curved space - a concept from the theory of relativity - linking past, present and future into one poetic NOW moment.
