Ruscha’s interest in language is often accompanied by an interest in the landscape, espe-cially that of the American West. His words appear on road signs, buildings and mountains, and across open skies and horizons. Sometimes words are strangely present through their disappearance. In his early photographic work, Ruscha created documentary images and books full of swimming pools, car parks, buildings on Sunset Boulevard, gas stations and many other features of life in L.A. In his paintings and drawings, these same subjects are combined with language to poetically evoke the changing fabric of the city through themes of evolution and destruction.
More than a decade after the original motif appeared in his signature Mountain paintings, Ruscha began producing complementary prints in 2010. Mountain Prints includes colour proofs, separation and cancellation proofs, as well as numbered editions from the limited edition series; it is a rare opportunity to witness Ruscha’s process experiments in the print medium in collaboration with the Hamilton Press.Ruscha has lived and worked in L.A. for more than sixty years. Through his innovative approach to painting, drawing and photography, Ruscha has influenced artists worldwide and is considered one of the most important figures in contemporary art.
